CHAPTER 4

Sexual Violence in Relationships

When women hear the term “sexual violence”, most think of rape. They picture an unknown man lurking in some dark place, waiting to leap out and grab them. That scene is a reality, but it is not the norm. According to the CDC, fewer than 14 percent of rapists are strangers. That means that before the assault, most victims had some relationship with their attackers.

The vast majority of rapes are acquaintance rapes. An acquaintance rape can occur on a date, at a party, in a non-dating encounter, or between intimate partners. Date rape is a serious problem today, particularly on college campuses.

Dating Expectations

Two people who go out together often have different ideas of what should happen on a date. Some men expect to “score,” or have sex, with their dates; many women want to have a good time without sex. Men sometimes think that if they spend money on their dates, the women owe them sex in return. Most women, on the other hand, believe their dates are supposed to pay and should be satisfied with a nice evening. If the two have had sex before, he may think she is willing or even wants to have sex any time they can. Or he may think she has no right to tell him “no.”
